Sound Off Louisiana pays tribute to the life of the mother of its founder, Helen Yvonne Burns.

Helen Yvonne Burns, mother of Sound Off Louisiana founder Robert Burns, celebrating her 85th birthday.  Ms. Burns passed away on July 9, 2021.

Sound Off Louisiana subscribers may have noted that there has been a pretty long hiatus since our last feature was published, and some may have even wondered why that is the case.  There actually is a very good reason.

Around June 23, 2021, this blog’s founder, Robert Burns, who lived his entire life with his mother, Helen Yvonne Burns, received notice that she had taken a significant downturn in her health and was approaching the end of her life.  Robert, who ultimately had to place his mom in Ollie Steele Burden Nursing Home (across the street from where they reside and they moved there 20 years ago in case that day ever came) on June 5, 2019, visited with his mom for 6-7 hours a day even after she entered the nursing home.  He even told one friend, “As far as I’m concerned, I just relocated her bedroom about 2,000 feet north!”

Obviously, when the pandemic hit, the ability to visit with his mom at all became nonexistent, but he was so thankful that the fine staff of CNAs at Ollie Steele were only too willing to take his mom to a rear door entrance where they could visit each day through the closed glass door.  He was also thankful that he and his mom were able to resume outdoor visits late last year and even one-hour indoor visits beginning about 10 weeks or so ago.

Yvonne went on to be with the Lord around 10:00 p.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021, and today’s Sound Off Louisiana feature is a celebratory memorial service officiated by Robert yesterday, Saturday, July 24, 2021, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Yvonne’s hometown of Darlington, Louisiana.  Here’s video of that service:

Many years ago, Yvonne asked for her son, Robert, to promise to her that he would grieve her passing for no more than two days and to then go on with his life and live it to the fullest.  Rest assured, just as he honored his mom while she was in her earthly home, so too will he honor her in her new Heavenly Home, and we’ll be actively resuming Sound Off Louisiana features in coming days as we know she would insist that be the case!

  1. Robert, my thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time in your life. I know you will miss your Mother. She always brought you great Joy and she loved you so much Robert.

  2. Mr. Robert Burns, you have my deep condolences on the passing of your mother. When death strikes we are never prepared and this is so true when it has been someone as mother. Again as you have lost the most valuable person in your life, always consider that your best asset left you with great moral values and work ethics that will be handed down generation to generation. God bless and keep you and your family whole in this time of personal grief.

  3. Just taking a moment to express thanks for each expression of condolences and of the extension of thoughts and prayers. They are all very much appreciated.
