Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux: “I do not comment on frivolous lawsuits.”

Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux

In light of our post of Saturday, September 22, 2018 entailing former Gonzales City Administrator Cathy Derbonne’s lawsuit against the City of Gonzales, we decided to attend this evening’s (9/24/18) meeting of the Gonzales City Council.  It’s an understatement to say that these meetings (or at least this one since it’s our first) are conducted in a “Speedy Gonzales” manner as the entire agenda was covered in less than 18 minutes (and that includes the prayer and pledge)!

Knowing that it is far too early for official comment from either Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux or any of the Gonzales Councilmen, our main purpose was to provide a sort of “lay of the land” and provide subscribers with an ability to make associations with names and faces for future meetings as we continue to provide follow-up features on the litigation.

Nevertheless, immediately after the meeting, we briefly spoke with Gonzales City Attorney Erin Lanoux, who is a candidate for Ascension Parish Court Judge.  We were of the opinion, based on some pre-meeting observations, that Lanoux may not even be aware of the lawsuit.  Our suspicions were confirmed when we asked her immediately after the meeting if she, Gonzales Councilmen, or Mayor Arceneaux may wish to make comment, and she responded, “I won’t be commenting as I don’t know the first thing about it.  Mayor Arceneaux can speak for himself.”

We then approached Mayor Arceneaux and explained that we realize it is very early to comment on the litigation but wanted to extend him the opportunity to do so if he may be so inclined.  Arceneaux responded:  “I do not comment on frivolous lawsuits.”  We offered him the opportunity to make even that brief statement directly into our camera, but he declined.  We then asked if the preceding quote was “off the record” or “on the record,” and he responded with an emphatic statement that the words he had just uttered were “on the record.”  We then provided Mayor Arceneaux with a business card and indicated that, whenever he may feel comfortable making a public statement on the litigation to give us a call and we’ll be happy to drive over and videotape whatever he may wish to say.  He expressed appreciation for our invitation.

With that, we now provide the meeting of the Gonzales City Council of Monday, September 24, 2018 in its entirety in order for our subscribers to obtain a “lay of the land” and make name and face associations just as we did earlier tonight.

Will Gov. Edwards tell Attorney General Jeff Landry to “shut the f— up” just as his Gaming Commission Chairman Ronnie Jones alleges his office told whistleblower Cathy Derbonne regarding unconstitutional appointments?
